How to Make the Most of a Job Fair – Before, During, and After
Prospect’s Fall 2025 job fair season brought together inclusive employers, community organizations, and hundreds of job seekers across Alberta. Events in Calgary, Edmonton, Airdrie, and Langdon, and Strathmore gave participants the chance to explore opportunities, make connections, and take meaningful steps toward employment.
If you attended one of these events, you may still be sorting through job leads, new contacts, and ideas for your next steps. If you missed out, there is good news. Prospect will be hosting another round of job fairs in early spring, returning to the same communities.
Whether you are preparing for your first job fair or looking to improve your approach, here are some practical tips to help you make the most of the experience before, during, and after the event.
Before the Job Fair
Know who is attending
Review the list of employers and service providers ahead of time. Make note of the ones that interest you and learn a little about what they do. This helps you ask better questions and shows that you are prepared.
Bring a strong resume
Update your resume and print several copies. Make sure it reflects your current experience and is easy to read. If you need help, connect with an employment service provider before the event.
Practice your introduction
Think about how you will introduce yourself. A short, confident summary of who you are and what you are looking for can help you make a strong first impression.
Dress for the occasion
Wear something that makes you feel confident and professional. You do not need to dress formally, but aim for clean and neat clothing that reflects your interest in finding work.
During the Job Fair
Be curious
Even if you have a plan, stay open to new opportunities. You might discover a role or employer you had not considered before.
Ask questions
Employers appreciate thoughtful questions. Ask about the types of roles they are hiring for, what they look for in candidates, and what the work environment is like.
Take notes
Write down key details from your conversations. This will help you remember who you spoke with and what stood out.
Be respectful of time
Keep your conversations focused and be mindful of others waiting to speak with the same employer.
After the Job Fair
Follow up
If you received a business card or were invited to apply, send a short message to thank the employer and express your interest. Mention something specific from your conversation to help them remember you.
Review and reflect
Go through your notes and think about what you learned. Did you discover a new career path? Are there employers you want to follow up with? Use this information to guide your next steps.
Stay connected
Keep an eye on upcoming events, job postings, and training opportunities. Prospect’s programs and services are available year round, and our next job fair season will begin in early spring.
Job fairs are more than just a chance to hand out resumes. They are a way to learn, connect, and take meaningful steps toward employment. With the right preparation and follow up, you can make the most of every opportunity.
